Since February, 2016 I have been working for the City of Bedford as the Director of Administrative Services. In this position I am one of seven department heads for the City of Bedford. My office resides in City Hall due to the many aspects of my job that require me to be available to the public, administration, and employees. I work closely with the Mayor’s Office, Clerk-Treasurer’s Office, and all Department Directors. As Director of Administrative Services, I am on the Emergency Administrative Committee. This Committee consists of myself, the Mayor, and the City Attorney. This Committee convenes in the event of disaster or immediate emergency.
In addition to working as the Director of Administrative Services, I currently hold a position on the Lawrence County Council, the fiscal governmental body that oversees finances for Lawrence County. I have held the position of President and Councilman during my time on the County Council. This position oversees all financial aspects of Lawrence County with an annual estimated budget of $24,795,015 for 2019.
I was elected Lawrence County Sheriff in 2007 and elected to a second term for a total of 8 years. While serving as Sheriff I was conservative but proactive in my approach to making Lawrence County a better place to reside. My accomplishments include starting the first tip line for Lawrence County, starting a multi-agency drug task force, and conducting a jail study to maintain the population at a working level. As Sheriff, I sat on multiple boards with community leaders in the government sector. I played a major role in the implementation of the safety for our children in our school systems. This included drills and monitoring the participation of school officials. I also assisted the Lawrence County Office of Family and Children with the Indiana Drug Endangered Children Advisory Committee.
While Sheriff, the Lawrence County Drug Task Force had one of the biggest drug busts in recent years. The results of the drug bust consisted of 1 ½ pounds of methamphetamine worth $86,000, 112.5 pounds of marijuana worth $134,400, $118,909 in cash, and about $10,000 – $20,000 in stolen property including handguns and long guns.
I was the Detective Commander at the Bedford Police Department with the rank of Major. I oversaw the criminal investigations and actively worked cases. I served on the Executive Board that is responsible for establishing policy, monitoring personnel issues, and investigating internal affairs. I was the Coordinator (Supervisor) for the Emergency Services Unit that consisted of a tactical entry team, sniper/spotter team, K-9 unit, hostage negotiator, and gas/less lethal unit.
Some of my achievements in law enforcement are Bedford Police Department Exchange Club Officer of the Year and the Law Enforcement Commendation Medal from the Sons of the American Revolution. I have also received a letter of commendation from the F.B.I. for involvement in a hostage/bank extortion case.
